Electronic prescribing

A safer, more efficient way to prescribe medications

Electronic prescriptions can help reduce medical mistakes caused by misreading the prescriber’s handwriting.  This means:

  • fewer medication errors and harmful drug events or interactions
  • better health outcomes, improved overall quality of care and enhanced patient safety
  • reduced costs for patients because you can check formularies or less expensive drug options at the time of patient contact
  • fewer pharmacy callbacks and rework to clarify prescriptions

e-prescribe and receive higher reimbursement from Medicare

Physicians who prescribe for Medicare patients and who adopt qualified e-prescribing systems may be eligible for an increase in reimbursement. You could get:

  • A 1 percent incentive payment for reporting years 2011 and 2012
  • A 0.5 percent incentive payment in reporting year 2013

For details and eligibility information about these programs, visit www.cms.hhs.gov.

As a health care leader, Aetna is committed making the health care system better and safer. We are involved in a variety of initiatives to help bring electronic prescribing to physician practices. They include:

  • Allscripts ePrescribe Platinum software now available at no cost to Aetna physicians. As part of Aetna’s agreement with CVS Caremark, Aetna physicians may enroll to use ePrescribe Platinum. The software requires no download, no new hardware and only minimal training. Sign up and start e-prescribing today. Learn more.
  • Sharing comprehensive patient information through Surescripts®. We offer physicians access to information they can use at the point of care. You can pull up Aetna’s formulary and a patient’s coverage requirements as you prescribe. Learn more
  • Immediate access to Aetna's prescription drug formularies with Epocrates Rx. Get free access to our formularies, dosing, contraindications, drug-to-drug interaction checker, as well as information on more than 1,200 diseases and conditions. Download these tools onto a mobile device or access them online. Learn more.
